"I would guess that there isn't the same level of restricted view on that bend in the railway" I'm sure that's true, as the westbound trains are on the inside of the bend. However, I'd like to widen the question, and to ask why LU still use whistle boards in this way. Because they are running a high-frequency service, LU rarely have any staff on the track during running hours. Indeed I believe it only happens in emergency situations. So just in case an emergency happens which requires engineers to be on the track, every westbound train between 07:00 and 19:00 is supposed to sound its whistle. That's 144 whistles a day. On the Piccadilly Line at Turnham Green and Stamford Brook, the same thing happens even more frequently, over 250 whistles per day at each location. I realise that it is a safety precaution, and I'm not suggesting that safety standards are lowered. But is it not possible to avoid this continual noise pollution by devising a different warning system? How does the DLR manage without such whistles despite having sharper bends? |
