Keeping cats in at night is also recommended by Hounslow Animal Welfare (HAWS). And I guess at least one consolation is whoever he is going too obviously cares enough to put a collar on him.....although that won't help with his dietary requirements. I know you say he loses his collars (please say he is also microchipped) but have you thought about getting one with a message on it....even if it stays on only for a short while his adopted owner may see it and get in touch with you.
