In fact, though the plan of the merger involved retaining the whole site for the merged school, each of which had 1,200 pupils at the time of the merger, the drop in school numbers did not fall evenly across the schools as the voluntary-aided schools (ie church schools) did not contract their admissions and as they had greater reputations and popularity (not always deserved by any means) and had enough applicants, they remained the same size roughly and the fall in numbers hit the 'county' or non-church schools hardest. Mr Weir, the head of Christopher Wren, was appointed head of the merged school but resigned a couple of years later.
