Richard - apologies for the delay in responding. There isn't a great deal more that I can add. Each whistle board has a purpose to remind train operators to warn track workers that there is a train oncoming, especially in an area of limited clearance. It isn't just pway staff that go onto track. Train managers can access track at vey short notice, usually to remove something or pursue vandals. Virtually every safety system that has been installed on UK railways has been, to my limited knowledge, in response to a serious incident. Although we belong to the same parent company (TfL) I don't know the answer to why DLR don't use them. I would guess that most of their track is elevated and not permanent way. |
